The air down here is stale, recycled through stone lungs for centuries. Subaru stood before the iron-bound door, his knuckles white against the cold handle. He could hear them breathing behind him—Rem's steady rhythm, Emilia's hopeful whisper. But he knew what waited inside: a mirror that showed only his failures. Every time he turned this knob, someone died. Today, he would not let it end in blood.

Reader's Guide

The arc begins upon the group's return to Roswaal's estate after the Capital crisis. Subaru must enter the Sanctuary to clear the Selection Examination required for Emilia's candidacy. He is met by Beatrice, who acts as the Gatekeeper and sets impossible trials that seem designed to fail him. Through repeated deaths via Return by Death, Subaru uncovers hidden truths about his presence in this world. A critical turning point occurs when Rem faces a fatal threat within the trials. In previous loops, she sacrifices herself for Subaru's sake, but he eventually finds a path where her survival is possible through emotional honesty rather than brute force. Subaru must confront Roswaal L. Mathers regarding his intentions and the nature of the Witch Factor. The arc concludes with Subaru successfully navigating the labyrinth, securing Emilia's status as a candidate, and accepting the burden of the Envy factor within him without losing himself to it.

• The series' editor Masahito Ikemoto first discovered the Re:Zero web novel in April 2013 when it appeared on his Twitter feed.
• Tappei Nagatsuki originally wrote The Familiar of Zero fan fiction on Shōsetsuka ni Narō before creating his own original isekai series, Re:Zero.
