Lore & Background

The Royal Capital of Lugunica was modeled on the city of Prague, according to illustrator Shinichirou Otsuka. It is the location where Subaru Natsuki is suddenly summoned after leaving a convenience store. The city is the seat of the Kingdom of Lugunica, where Emilia is a candidate to become the next ruler. It is here that Subaru is killed while trying to help Emilia, only to revive some hours in the past, realizing he has the power to turn back time after his death. The capital is also where the Witch Cult, who represent seven deadly sins, forces Subaru to fight against them in each arc the novel is divided into.

In Their Own Story

Subaru Natsuki is a NEET who is suddenly summoned to a fantasy-like world. Just after arriving in the Royal Capital, he is killed while trying to help a young half-elf he befriends, Emilia, who is a candidate to become the next ruler of the Kingdom of Lugunica. After dying a few times, Subaru realizes that he has the power to turn back time after his death. After successfully helping Emilia, Subaru starts living in one of the Mansions of Roswaal L. Mathers as a butler. Out of gratitude and affection for Emilia, Subaru makes use of his newfound ability to protect her and help on her ambition to be successfully appointed as the next queen, also providing assistance to other friends he makes along the way, while suffering due to the pain inflicted on him every time he dies, and carrying along the memories of everything that happened before his power activates, which is forgotten by everybody except for him.

The Royal Capital is the primary setting for the beginning of Subaru Natsuki's journey in another world. It is the location of the Kingdom of Lugunica, where the royal selection process takes place for candidates like Emilia. The city's layout, modeled on Prague, includes the Royal Palace and central plaza. It is in the capital that Subaru first encounters the Witch Cult and begins his fight against them. The city serves as the starting point for the first arc of the series, where Subaru must navigate the dangers of this new world and learn to use his Return by Death ability to protect Emilia and himself.
