The Royal Selection Ceremony is the process to choose the next ruler of Lugunica, triggered by the death of the previous ruler without a clear heir. Emilia is one of the candidates to become the next ruler in this royal election, which would make her the 42nd king of Lugunica. Candidates must possess an insignia in order to be eligible to participate in the election. Emilia's insignia, which she needs to possess in order to be eligible to participate in the election, is stolen by Felt. Subaru first meets Emilia when her insignia is stolen. Among the half breeds and other discriminated or disenfranchised races and people in Lugunica, Emilia is seen as their hope for a better future due to her ideal of democracy and better social equality. Because of her heritage and resemblance to Satella, however, Emilia is often shunned and hated by most people, leaving her lonely and without any friends prior to meeting Subaru.

Each flag bore a crest—a wolf, a rose, a crown—representing the hopes and ambitions of those vying for the throne. Around him, guards marched with rhythmic precision, their armor gleaming under the torchlight. Whispers drifted through the crowd like smoke; rumors of assassins, of cultists, of magic too dangerous to speak aloud. He tightened his grip on his coat, feeling the weight of a world that did not want him here. The ceremony was more than a contest; it was a battlefield where every move could be fatal.

Mathers is a benefactor and sponsor for Emilia's bid for the throne. He is a Margrave, as well as an Imperial Wizard and Count. It is revealed that his reason for supporting Emilia is for him to kill the Dragon. It is eventually revealed that he is actually far older than he appears, having possessed the bodies of his descendants in hopes of living long enough to revive Echidna, his master and the love of his life.

• Emilia is over a hundred years old, although most of the time she was frozen in the forest, and her mental state is still that of a teenager.
• Emilia initially introduces herself to Subaru as 'Satella' in the first loop, but later corrects this to her real name. 'Satella' is also the name of the 'Witch of Envy', whose appearance is said to resemble her own.
• Roswaal L. Mathers is a Margrave and court mage who supports Emilia's bid for the throne.
• Felt is a 15-year-old thief who grew up in the slums of the capital and initially appeared as a thief who stole Emilia's insignia.
